Winston-Salem NC
Winston-Salem, NC, located at the intersection of two major highways, is a suburb of North Carolina's state capital, Raleigh. Some interesting facts about Winston-Salem are that it has "twin cities" in Japan and Germany, it has the highest number of national parks per capita, and its last official act as state capital was to change its name from "Winston" to "Winston-Salem."
The average high temperature during the summer months is 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) with an average low during winter months hovering around 33 degrees Fahrenheit (-1 degree Celsius). As Winston-Salem averages only 51 inches (130 cm) of rain annually, outdoor activities are popular year-round. The city hosts annual events such as an air show and a marathon and is also home to the historic R.J Reynolds Tobacco Company building - now used by RJ Reynolds Industries.
R.J Reynolds Tobacco Company building, Winston-Salem
Tobacco was first introduced to the area in 1747 by John Neely who planted seeds of an imported Turkish variety on his land which would later become known as "Sunnyland" (as it received more hours of sun than any other location in North Carolina). The first few crops were unimpressive but following a visit from Revolutionary War hero Dr. Benjamin Rush tobacco became big business for the area, with large plantations run by overseers sending bright leaf eastward via railroad for sale and distribution throughout the United States. One bright leaf merchant named R.J Reynolds would go on to found the R.J Reynolds Tobacco Company and become one of Winston-Salem's most famous citizens, and it is his name that was chosen for the building now used by RJ Reynolds Industries.
